How a pro DFS player prepares for a new season

By Stars on August 16, 2016

In the first of a new series of Fantasy Stars articles we caught up with professional DFS player Sean Koerner to discuss how he prepares for a new NFL season of DFS.

Sean started playing regular season-long fantasy MLB in 1997 and started playing season long NFL in 1998.

It was over this period of time he developed a love for not only the games but for the stats and player metrics that drive them both.

“It wasn’t until 2011 that I first played Daily Fantasy Sports when it was brand new concept” Koerner said,

The industry has certainly blossomed since those early contests way back in 2011,

“Personally, I didn’t really start to get serious until about 2013.” he added.

Koerner had what may be deemed as a surprising answer when quizzed on the level of emphasis he places on preseason games from a DFS perspective.

“In terms of the actual games, not much at all really. Preseason is a good way to at least see how rookies may fare at the next level or even an idea of how a player who changed teams looks in a new system.”

“Either way, in the lead-in to the new season for me, it’s more about following news in order to see how certain depth charts shape up, or how teams plan on changing their approach from last year.

Further to that, to also see how any injuries may affect teams/players early in the season potentially opening up more opportunities for players that were previously of low value”

Feel free to start asking me your way too early Fantasy Football questions you may have. Never too early to start preparing!

— Sean Koerner (@The_Oddsmaker) July 14, 2016

The preseason is a great time to reflect on strategy, assess data and work out ways he can improve for the upcoming season.

“Constantly refining my projection models. That is key since I rely so much on their accuracy and where they lead me.”

Sean also made mention of how he often learns the most from the mistakes he made in prior seasons.

“This can range from game selection on certain slates, money management, and even having a solid lock-time process in place since sometimes you can really get into trouble if you don’t.”

In season, Sean claims to spend a few hours each week setting up his player projections for the weeks games.

During this time he is busy updating and acquiring information based around news, injuries and potential team changes.

“Come Saturday I normally spend a few hours really starting to nail them down and get some of my optimal teams out there to reserve a nice chunk of equity.” he said

As for game day (Sunday) Sean is watching the inactive lists like a hawk and preparing plans B and C in case of any late news that will shake up his envisaged lineups.

“Sunday morning I spend another couple hours updating the projections even more and follow the inactive lists very closely to make sure there are no surprises.

From there I spend the last hour finalizing all my lineups on all the sites I play and have some emergency/backup plans in case any late news messes up my plan.”

Despite Football season being just around the corner and seemingly America’s favourite season-long fantasy sport Sean identified the NBA as his favourite sport for DFS contests.

Alex_Len_Dunk

“Over time, it has evolved into the NBA for me.

I just love how it fits my playing style perfectly. There isn’t as much randomness as the other sports that rely a bit more on a single play. A home run, goal, and touchdown are worth so much in MLB/NHL/NFL. As much as those stabilize over the long run, anything can happen on a daily basis though which is why you see a lot of random players help win GPPs every day.”

Such events of course, don’t happen as much in NBA contests since a player needs to not only get the playing time, but play at a much higher level then usual to produce such a high variance score.

“I feel like because of this, there is a bit more of an edge to people who put in the time and have solid projections when it comes to the NBA.” Koerner added.

Sean also touched on the importance to him of being available around lock-out time to make any necessary changes to his lineups.

“There is a huge edge when you are not only able to take these players out last second if you have them but also can target a player that benefits from the news as they will likely have fairly low ownership if other users don’t have much time to adjust.”

When asked if there was any advice for budding DFS players or indeed DFS players looking to make the leap and play on a more professional level Sean was full of great advice.

“I think the main advice I would give is to have a lot of patience. Have patience and take the time to improve not only your game but also find out what sites/game types you excel at.”

“I see way too many people just putting $3 out there every night to win $50k for 1st place in a massive tournament. Don’t get lured into the “big win” so much early on. Grind your way in smaller stake 50/50s, double ups, single entry tournaments.”

“This is a tough industry to be profitable and I feel people don’t realize the hard work it takes to do just that. You have to learn how to have fun just trying to win a 10-man league and try to get really good at that. Once your skills are up to par – start to be more aggressive with your bankroll management and try to get that to grow at a steady rate.

“Once you are able to get enough equity out there on a daily basis then you will have the bankroll to put in a high risk/high reward type lineup in a bigger GPP and not be so concerned on winning the “big one.

“I look at it much more like managing a stock portfolio where you allocate a certain percentage of your bank in safer “cash” games and a smaller percentage in riskier “GPP”s and treat it as a long-term money maker as opposed to a get rich quick operation.”

Terrific advice from an industry professional.

Speaking of advice, Sean is giving it out daily on his various social media platforms. Give him a follow on Twitter!

Understanding EPL Daily Fantasy – Moneyball

By Stars on August 13, 2016

EPL_Rebrand

The EPL season has arrived with the first games set to kick-off this evening (Saturday the 13th of August) Australian time.

We thought we’d give you a quick rundown on understanding how to play Moneyball’s EPL Daily Fantasy contests.

Firstly, we recommended everyone takes a look at the odds for all the games to get a feel of how things are expected to shake out in the marketplace.

READ How we can gain an edge by looking at the odds

Secondly, create a Moneyball account and head to the lobby.

As you can see there is a stack of options for EPL fans starting at $2 up to $15 buy-ins. For the

For the purpose of the exercise, we will focus in on the $1,000 GPP ‘EPL ALL OF ROUND SPECIAL’.

Scoring system

See below for the info on all the games that will apply to the $1,000 GPP contest and also most importantly, the scoring system that will be used to calculate the scores of your players.

You can also click the ‘prizes’ tab to find out how the pool will be distributed among the top EPL DFS players for the contest!

The first things that stand out are that along with Goals, clean sheets are very valuable for goalkeepers and defenders.

So, be sure to check the projected amount of goals in each game and perhaps target defensive players with low totals!

Conversely with goals worth 7 points and assists worth 4 points games with high scoring totals seem attractive when picking strikers and midfielders! You may also want to do some research on who takes the penalties for each of the teams.

Minutes played are a small metric (0.02 points per minute) but they will accrue quickly so ensuring your players are starting or at least projected to play a good chunk of minutes is another good thing to tick off.

Finally, red and yellow cards are negative points so those players that run the gauntlet a little bit can be costly!

We hope to see you all in the $1,000 Moneyball EPL GPP tonight,

Good luck with your lineups, be sure to share them with us on both Twitter and Facebook!

Friday Night Footy DFS preview – Dogs v Pies

By Stars on August 12, 2016

The pointy end of the AFL season has come around making for some really tricky DFS weeks.

Tonight the Bulldogs host the Magpies at Etihad Stadium and it’s the Bulldogs who will go into the game as warm favourites with CrownBet at $1.38 or 72.46% win probability.

The Bulldogs last week showed the fight they’ve shown all season with a gritty win over the Kangaroos whereas the Magpies were awful against the Tigers on Friday Night.

Using betting odds to create winning DFS lineups

Tonight we are going to take a pretty hard stance against the Magpies and stack our lineups with lots of Bulldogs players.

They are a better team on all of our key metrics, they’ve beaten Collingwood on the last three occasions and we see them getting the job done again comfortably tonight.

The teams

The Bulldogs still lead the AFL in disposals averaging 415.9 per game, Collingwood rank eighth with 375.9 per game.

Check how the two teams will lineup below. It’s important to note that Magpies skipper and absolute star Scott Pendlebury was under a slight injury cloud this week, enough for us to fade him in most contests tonight.

Best value DFS plays

Fletcher Roberts – Defender – Western Bulldogs
Bargain basement $3,500 option that will allow us to load up on some premium midfielders. Roberts has never had more than 13 disposals in an AFL game despite playing 13 career games already but he should be able to get enough value for us at the position. He’s listed at Full-Back and might get the job on someone like Jesse White, anything over 60 fantasy points and we’d be happy. He’s one of few bargain basement players on the board tonight and we are happy to side with him.

Luke Dalhaus – Midfielder – Western Bulldogs
One of our best plays of the night is young Luke Dalhaus. He looks slightly undervalued still in terms of fantasy prices due to the layoff he had through injury. His two return games have been very solid however and we expect him to continue his hot form again tonight. With a few key injuries to Bulldogs midfielders he will be relied upon to go head-to-head with the likes of Treloar, Pendlebury and Adams.

Using betting odds to create winning DFS line-ups

By Stars on August 11, 2016

A wise man once said, the final price in terms of odds on a sporting event is a sum of all the collective market intelligence. We’re here to show you how you can leverage this collective market intelligence and betting odds to create winning DFS line-ups.

That is, both from the bettors and the guys facilitating the bets, the bookies. Odds fluctuate as money comes into the system and bettors and bookmakers opinions alike are factored into one big ‘consensus’ price.

Many DFS players are also sharp sports betting players and many have already observed a way in which you can gain an edge playing fantasy contests.

By using the odds on that specific event in your favour.

TIP: The later you check the odds and use them to set your lineup the better. Remember, the more money that goes into a betting market theoretically the more efficient the odds will become.

Let’s take a look at a few examples whereby we can gain an edge or draw a positive conclusion based off what the online bookmakers odds are on a specific event relating to a daily fantasy sports contest.

A) EPL Week 1

When it comes to the EPL and Soccer Fantasy in general the obvious one we are looking for when picking strikers and even attacking midfielders in our DFS lineups is finding those high scoring games each week. Games that will have lots of assists and lots of goals.

What’s the most effective way to predict how many goals will be scored in a game? Looking at the goals total betting market!

The odds below represent Pinnacle Sports’ prices and lines on the goals totals for Week 1 EPL matches.

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 6.04.32 PM

From observing the above we can conclude that the games that is predicted to be the highest scoring is Manchester City v Sunderland, with the Over 3 goals being slightly favored compared to the under.

So, we’d immediately be looking at both Sunderland and Manchester City strikers to see if there was any value for us. But before we do, it’s important to also check the Head-to-head odds for the game in question. If the odds are pretty much even than we can reasonably assume that the goals scored will be evenly distributed between the two teams.

However, in this case Manchester City are very warm favourites at $1.27 implying a win probability of 78.74%. From that we can draw the conclusion that if goals are to be scored in this game, more than likely they’ll be scored by Manchester City players.

We’d then be looking at the projected starting lineup for City and ensuring all of the potential value options we find are set to play.

B) PGA Golf Tournament – The John Deere Classic

This week the PGA Tour heads to Illinois for the John Deere Classic. With PGA DFS contests going on at FanDuel, DraftKings and FanSports we can use the odds on this tournament to make more effective DFS Golf lineups.

The easiest way to do this is to compare the odds on the players to the player prices on your DFS website. Some sites have caught on to this little trick and now base their prices almost directly off the odds but some haven’t yet caught up.

For example, looking at the large odds grid below we can see that Jon Rahm is the consensus third pick in betting to win the tournament. His chances of winning range from 12-1 out to as much as 16-1 at some bookmakers.

Funnily enough however, he is priced at just $7,600 in FanSports PGA contests this weekend, almost half the price of Zach Johnson ($15,000) and Kevin Na ($14,600). The odds grid below shows us that Kevin Na is considered roughly a 20-1 chance of winning the tournament whereas Steve Stricker is considered a 12-1 chance. So naturally, you’d expect Stricker to cost more to put into your fantasy lineup? Not this time! Stricker is $12,700 with FanSports. $1,900 cheaper than Na despite his odds being considerably shorter to win the event.

Needless to say at just $7,600 Jon Rahm is a MUST PLAY if you are putting together a FanSports lineup this weekend.

DFS_Odds_Comparison_PGA

TIP: It’s always a good idea to compare the prices at multiple online bookmakers to increase the accuracy of your conclusions. There are many online odds comparisons sites that will be helpful for this. In the example for the PGA tournament above, we are using oddschecker.com

There are many ways in which a DFS player can find an edge and this is one of the more popular methods out there so be conscious of overplaying information you uncover by looking at the odds.

With that being said, a closing price on a liquid sporting event like an NBA, NFL, EPL or AFL match is a efficient number that will represent something very close to the best outcome predictor over the journey so you need to respect this information.
